Experiments and Extra Activities
Week 1 : Classification of Organisms
Plants Episode |
Bill Nye the Science Guy! BILL BILL BILL! Watch Bill Nye explore the world of plants! Working through experiments involving glucose, discovering how photosynthesis creates the oxygen we breathe, and how plants create their own food. |
Photosynthesis Experiment
Plants are wonderful chemical reorganizers. Using the sun’s energy and a process called photosynthesis, they can turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar (glucose) and oxygen.
Thanks to plants and other autotrophs like algae, Earth has an oxygen-containing atmosphere that can sustain animal and human life. |

Questions to Think About: What happens if you duplicate the experiment in a room with no light? Tap water contains some carbon dioxide. How do you think the experiment would work with lake or pond water? |
(If you’re using test tubes, you can put them in small cups or beakers so they don’t tip over.)

Week 2: Ecosystems
Food Webs Episode |
"There's probably something eating at you right now!" Watch Bill Nye explore Food Webs! Connecting animals to plants and plants to people, he takes us on an adventure learning all about the different aspects of ecosystems, food chains, and food webs. |
Build your own Terrarium!Terrariums are a great way to demonstrate a very small scale ecosystem. In this terrarium we will be planting succulents (plants that need little water) so that we can watch them grow when introducing abiotic factors such as water, and sunlight.
